The Chicks Have Flown

The little Chaffinch Chicks gave me a small window of opportunity for a photo shoot before they flew the nest.

I cannot be sure when they left but the nest is definitely empty.

I'm sorry that we didn't get to see them fledge but I suppose it was never going to happen while we were pottering about.

We are still seeing Mum and Dad about so I'm guessing they have taken their young to a more densely leafed tree to continue their upbringing.

I read that Chaffinches will nest twice in a year and we wondered if they would return to this nest. However, either Mum or another Chaffinch has been visiting the nest and appears to be dismantling it? Or maybe Mum left something behind that she needed?

Meanwhile, the House Martins have been casing our joint over the past few days. They nested under our eaves last year but they don't seem to have made up their mind yet. We have new fascias and soffits so maybe that is putting them off?

  1. We have just taken down nest boxes as the babies have all flown the coop, we want to take the boxes with us, the robin box that we have had up for years has never been occupied and when we went to take it down the other day there was a nest in it, the blue tits have been introducing there young to the bird feeder outside the kitchen window and its lovely watching the babies sitting there with there mouths open waiting for tit bits from the parents, every time I think about getting the camera they fly off.

    1. It's amazing that birds always seem to spot a camera! :)

  2. Nice to have had the opportunity to see the Chaffinch family, even though you missed the fledglings. I have noticed a Black-capped Chickadee going in and out of an old next box affixed to the washing line post. I have been reluctant to use the washing line until they fly away in case I jiggle them about! It sure is interesting to watch the birds this time of year!

    1. We hardly saw any in Yorkshire. I read somewhere that they thrive in Scotland so maybe they are working their way south?
